OPAL - Outdoor Play and Learning

At Smarden, we believe in 'free range children' and endeavour to make our playtimes as varied and fun as possible. We go outside no matter the weather as children need time to connect with their friends, spend time in nature and have the freedom to run and move. Our grounds include a playing field, a wooded area, a pond, gazebo, quiet social spaces, climbing frames, a trim trail as well as a traditional playground. We use our field and woods throughout the year, giving the children the opportunity to explore the digging pit, mud kitchen, den making as well as spend time in nature.

All children need labelled wellies and waterproofs as part of our OPAL uniform. We love getting muddy at Smarden!

Recently we have updated our grounds with more sports equipment; ball scoops, badminton sets, hula hoops, football nets and training bands. We are also developing an arts and crafts area under the gazebo. There are science kits for children to go exploring with binoculars, bug catchers and magnifying glasses.

More info on developments are coming soon!

Donations of faded flowers, natural resources for the mud kitchen, guttering, old prams, scooters, cardboard for junk modelling are always appreciated!

The core OPAL team consists of Mrs Ward, Mrs Avery and Mrs Hammick. Please do speak to us if you would like to make a donation of resources, or have any questions.
